SEKU Annual Championships 2008
The SEKU Annual took place Saturday 15th March at the
usual venue - the Mountbatten Centre, Alexandra Park, Portsmouth. The Mountbatten is
currently undergoing a massive rebuilding progrmme that made entry to the building a
little more difficult than usual.
This did not deter competitors or spectators however and
although attendance was lower than expected the day got underway on schedule. Although the
bigger clubs were again prominent, smaller clubs found themselves amongst the medals, it
is refreshing to see results spread across the membership - see full list of reults below.

Thanks to all those competitors, timekeepers, referees, judges,
helpers, parents and spectators alike for making the day succsessful and enjoyable.
You may have noticed the absence of Alan 'Knocker' White from the
refereeing panel. Alan has reluctantly resigned from SEKU after many years of
support both as member and cometition official in order to continue his love of
officiating at EKF/WKF refereeing level. Thanks to Alan for his contant support and
good luck in your future officiating.
It was nice to see our friend Eileen Frape who trvelled down from
Bristol with John Shyne. Eileen would always accompany husband John who sadly died
following his battle with cancer a couple years back. Johns Avon Karate club has
been in membership with SEKU for many years and was taken on by his senior student John
Shyne.
It was unusual to see Steve Hollister on the other side of the
fence refereeing and judging at the championships especially with his black eye patch!.
Steve took a heavy knock at the Legend Championships in February and will have to
undergo an operation next week in order to repair the damage - good luck to him.
SEKU members do us proud at the Legend
It turned out to be another
succesful day for the SEKU Team Squad at the Legend Championships in Bracknell Saturday 23
February 2008. New Squad members from Steve Hollisters Club fitted in and competed

Special Mentions
Tracey Corby was Grand Champion winning both Ladies Black
Belt Kata & Kumite as well as being a member of gold medal winning mixed team.
Lee Hollister in his first event in SEKU colours won
Bronze in the Mens Black & Brown Belt Kumite. He was also unbeaten in the 5 x
Man Team Event which won Gold.
Ben Maher won his first event for SEKU in a very tough
Cadet (16-20 yrs) Kumite category.
Scott Clements fought superbly to retain the Junior
Kumite title he won last year.
Riccardo Catindig-Stagg won his first Squad Event in the
Senior section, an excellant achievement, especially to beat last years champion - fellow
SEKU member George Oliver in a tough final.
Joe Crowe showed excellent improvement in the Kumite by
winning Gold - his first win for the SEKU Squad
Congratulations to all those involved - you did us proud! Thanks
also to Paul Uren for overseeing all competitors, and to the SEKU officials who took part
they were - Brian Smith, Alan Lewis, Stacey Crowe, Terry Oliver, Paul Moreby and Sue
O'Donnell (Hope we've not missed anyone but I'm sure you will let us know!).
Spare a thought for Steve Hollister
who sustained a nasty injury in the individual Kumite and as a result will have to undergo
surgery to stableize his eye socket - good luck Steve
Next Shobu-Ippon Championship Event - Saturday 10th May 2008 in Guildford.
BE THERE!
Black & Brown belt Course Newport IOW
The first event of the New Year took
place at the Medina Centre Newport on the Isle of Wight Sunday 3rd February 2008.
The course content was as usual very good and intuitive with Mervyn O'Donnell taking
course members through Kata Bassai Sho. The second class was devoted to Shobu
Ippon-Sho and Shobu Ippon-Ni.
For the first event of the year the
course was suprisingly not well attended with prominent members very noticable by their
absence, but this was put down to bad weather and the cancellation of the Hovercraft into
Ryde.

37th Portsmouth Open Championships
the Mountbatten Centre 17th November 2007
So the 37th Portsmouth Open Karate Tournament has
been and gone and didn't everyone do well. It was a very successful day on many levels.
Successful for SEKU and the Shotokan Alliance in having so many good competitors from far
and wide we appreciate you travelling to Portsmouth on a rainy, chilly November morning.
Successful for the organisors as the day went smoothly without major hiccup. Successful
for the spectators who came and watched and were thoroughly entertained by you all and
finally successful for the competitors themselves that's you, for all the hard work,
effort, dedication and training you put in to make this competition what it was. So
whether you gained a medal or a round of applause take a bow and our thanks.
Thanks also to our Trophy Sponsors Viviers (UK) Ltd
who have been sponsoring us for many years and to Cyber Budo World for
their support of the 'Shotokan Alliance' - Shobu Ippon is alive and well
- See you at POKT 2008

SEKU Instructor Class
The SEKU Instructor Class convened Sunday 4th November 2008
at the Priory Community Sports Centre, Fawcett Road, Southsea. This has been a new
venue for us this year and class members seem to enjoy the facillities.
The Class began with Brian Smith taking us through a
warm-up session, nothing too strenerous. This was followed by Merv O'Donnell leading
a thourough study of Jiin Kata from the performence to its bunkai (applications) in its
variuos forms. Mick Dewey lead the final part covering the performance of the basis
techniques of Shotokan Karate and their application. This was time for class members
to revise and refine their technique and it was quite supprising how some Intructors had
become somewhat 'rusty' in their performance and understanding of certain aspects of their
training and teaching.
Then again this is what the current Instructor Class is all
about - it is not about 'blood and thunder' but about improving your teaching
abillity and how to get it across to your students. Its a great pity that those
Instructors who are missing from these Classes do not get along more often as it is they
and their students who will benefit more.
The class finished with Mervyn O'Donnell running through
the grading syllabus that will be introduced for those clubs wishing to participate in
gradings for children from six to under eight yeras of age. This is not a grading as
such but a progress report that will be a light exam conducted at club level. We
must stress to Club Instructors that to qualify for examiner status in this scheme you
must attend the Instructor Classes regularly.
The next scheduled Instructor Class will be Sunday 6th
April 2008 at the Priory Community Sports Centre, Fawcett Road, Southsea, Portsmouth.
Shotokan Alliance Cometition Officials Course -
Reading
The 'Shotokan Alliance' of
which the Portsmouth Open Karate Competition is a founder member, staged their first
Competition Officials Training Course at the Holiday Inn Reading Saturday 29th September
2007.
Twenty Eight potential qualifiers
from the five 'Shotokan Alliance' member associations attended this course that covered
every aspect of cometition day from Time Keeper/Scorer to Tatami Chief. Darren
Jumnoodoo opened the course by explaining what the Alliance was all about and why it was
formed. Kevin Thirlow then gave an excellent Power Point lecture covering the rules
of Shobu Ippon. A break for Coffee and Biscuits and was followed by practical Kumite
Refereeing/Judging given by SEKU's Brian Smith. Simon Staples then took over an
overview of Kata performance and Judging with both point scoring and use of the flag
system.
The course also attended
by Mick Dewey, Mervyn O'Donnell and Gerry Breeze overseeing the day and representing their
Alliance Tournaments. The day proved to be very worthwill and extremely popular will
be staged again sometime in the new year. The next Shotokan Alliance Competition
will be the Portsmouth Open Shobu Ippon Event at the Mountbatten Centre Saturday 17th
November 2007.
This course is open to all
those who are interested and will only improve your Refereeing/Judging ability, and will
eventually lead to a 'Shotokan Alliance' qualification. This qualification will in
no way effect the qualifycation you hold with your own association but will enhance your
understanding of Shobu Ippon Events overall.
SEKU Memebers
in attendance were: Alan Lewis, Terry Oliver, Sacey Crowe,
Dave Pickford, Craig Foley, Paul Moreby, Matt Powell, Sue
O'Donnell, Lowry Green. If you are interested in attending these courses, please
presurise your club Instructor/Sectretary for details
Black & brown Belt Class in Portchester
A well attended Black & Brown
Belt class took place Sunday 16th September 2007 following the AGM. The classes were
split into two groups one of Black Belts led by Sensei Brian Smith and the Brown Belt
group by Sensie Mervyn O'Donnell, each group practicing a relevent Katafor their
particular level. For the second class everyone pitched into one class led by Sensie
Mick Dewey for a lesson of revision in Kihon Ippon Kumite. Sensie Micks reasoning
was that Kihon is our foundation and it does not hurt to return to it as often as
possible. The lesson was well received as were the two previous Kata classes. The
classes were followed by the usual Black Belt examination which was unusually small.

SHOBU
IPPON EVENT - GUILDFORD
SATURDAY
12th MAY 2007
It was another
tough long day for everyone involved, especially those travelling up and back from
Plymouth in one day! (I do not know how Shaun managed to stay awake driving home!)
Hannah Day, back on
top form again by winning the kata event, and with Tracy Corby coming second, we dominated
a tough event. The mens kata event was even more impressive, with numerous
champions and a massive field of competitors; Shaun Eglinton and Dave Galloway managed to
get through to the final two. Shaun won with Unsu; and as we have come to expect, it
was a fantastic performance. Daves Kanku Sho was very high quality also and he
has really stepped up to the top class in the mens Kata after this excellent result.
In the junior
events, Riccardo Catindig-Stagg won gold in the over 5-foot 10th 3rd
kyu section, in his first event competing for the squad. But the two outstanding
juniors were George Oliver and Scott Clements, winning Gold and Silver respectively in the
over 5 foot brown and black belt kumite. Scott was up against it all day fighting
numerous competitors who must have been almost a foot taller than him! He was beaten
up far beyond the rules should allow, but never lost control or etiquette once, and his
spirit was a credit to him and the values instilled in every SEKU karate-ka. George
had an equally tough day, and fought through what seemed like a never-ending number of
tough fights to reach the final. His spirit and attitude was excellent also, and he
thoroughly deserved his win, beating Scott in a high class final. I believe that
this was Georges fourth competition win in a row, a fantastic achievement.
I must also
mention Matthew Eglinton, who fought fantastically in the youths category, only to
almost be knocked unconscious in two consecutive fights! He was too injured to fight
for the 3rd/4th fight off, so was unlucky to lose out on a medal.
In the team
kumite, the ladies continued their domination of the Shobu Ippon events winning Gold again
beating two international teams in the round-robin final. The team was
depleted due to two shocking injuries sustained in the individuals by Emma Williams and
Lauren Beech, so Emma Robins kindly fought for SEKU and did us proud, helping Tracy Corby
and Becca Cox to the victory.
In the three
club teams, Portsmouth B led by Keith Williams won the Silver and Steve
Hollisters Plymouth team won Bronze, with Pompey A gaining fourth.
The last event
of the day was the prestige five-man team event. The men have trained
very hard for this one and came through with flying colours winning the gold. The
event was judged on the first to three wins basis, so it was important to go
for the victories, which the lads did fantastically. They won three rounds, beating
the FBSKUI team 3-0, and then winning a very tough battle with ASK 3-2, before beating
Gakushuin in the final 3-0. The team consisted of Steve Hollister (Plymouth), Dave
Galloway (Portsmouth), Keith Williams (Portsmouth), Shaun Eglinton (Plymouth) and Matt
Poser Powell (Portchester).
Overall,
the results were: 6 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze.
Lastly Id
like to mention that quite a few people turned up to support the SEKU team, including some
parents of the junior members as well as members from Sensei Smiths club. This
was very much appreciated by all of the squad.

Black & Brown Belt Course in Portishead, Avon
Novembers Black & Brown Belt Course was staged in
Portishead Avon Sunday 26th November 2006. Not so well attended this time but never
the less the class content was constructive and enjoyable for the members in attendance.
The class, was conducted by Sensei's Mick Dewey and Brian Smith, and students
were put through their paces with revision in Kihon Kumite followed by the same techniques
put together in freeflow mode. Kata 'Jion' was covered and some bunkia was applied
by the inovative Brian Smith. Sensie Mervyn O'Donnell had other Karate business to take
care of and was unable to attend.
It was a good course although a fairly small amount of
members entered the Dan Grading examination, those who succeded are listed below.

Stick Fighting and Karate Training Course
A training course in stick fighting was staged by Dave
Clare at the Portchester Dojo it was well attended and members found it very interesting
and enjoyed themselves greatly. Alan Lewis instructor at the Crofton Karate Club led
instruction in Karate.
The whole evening went well and raised a total of £416.00
for the "Damons Health Angel Fund"
Through courses like these and other events plus donations
etc, we have been able to purchase the first course of the drug "Aimspro"
The drug has been recieveing some very good press for the treatment of MS
sufferers in the media of late but typically, is unavailable by prescription on the
NHS but can be obtained privately. It is very expensive to buy so you will appreciate that
the above fund raising was well recived.
Thanks to all who attended, Dave Clare and Alan Lewis for
giving their instruction free and to Mervyn O'Donnell who made his Dojo available.
SEKU AGM Sunday 1st October 2006
The SEKU AGM took place Sunday 1st October 2006 at the Portchester Community School. It
was a well attended meeting and before it began, Ken Lyons, Instructor at the Uxbridge
Karate Club, took the advantage of advertising his recently published book - the
Shotokan Pocket Book - handing out complimentary issues to those in
attendance. The book is a copilation of the translation of Karateka terminology and
other Japanese words and phrases into English. It is a very interesting book and
will be useful to both junior and senior Karateka alike. The book will be available
soon through Makoto.
Tribute was paid to John Frape who tradgically died in April this year and some words
of acclaim were spoken by John Shyne who is now responsible for the Instruction at the
Avon Club. He spoke of SEKU being a large family and that the family had lost one of
it's most popular and loyal members, all those present agreed wholeheartedly.
Brian Smith expressed his disappointment in SEKU having it's acreditation as a
registered body for the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) cancelled. This has been
brought about by the reluctance of members applying for CRB disclosure and SEKU therefore,
not reaching the minimum amount of applications needed to continue with this
facility.
Thanks to Paul Uren for the presentation of the SEKU Team Squad Report. We are
actively encouraging new faces to the regular training sessions to train alongside senior
members who will help and assure them with their progress. With Pauls enthusiasm and
that of Keith Williams and the rest of the squad members I'm sure the team will go from
strength to strength.
We will be posting the minutes of this meeting on to the website as soon as they become
available.
Black & Brown Belt Course at Portchester
A well attended couse took place at Portchester Community
School immediatly following the Annual General Meeting. The course was well attended
and it contained good content, with Sensie's Mervyn O'Donnell and Brian Smith led the
training ably assisted by Fitness Factory Instructor Mark Elliott who dealt with the Brown
Belt class. Sensei Mick Dewey oversaw the training and was also wearing a Gi for the first
time since 5th March when he underwent major surgery to his leg
The class began with a traditional warm up led Mark Elliott
but before training began in earnest, some important announcements were made by Sensei
Mick Dewey.
The first announcement was that, as of that day, Sensei
Mervyn O'Donnell would be promoted to 7th Dan, the promotion was well recieved by the
seventy black and brown belts in attendance and desrvedly so. Other announcements
were made, they were for promotion to 5th Dan for Crofton KC, Sensei Alan Lewis - Bromley
KC, Paul Moreby - and Lovedean KC member Terry Oliver. These promotions were all very
fitting as next year will be the 25th anniversery of SEKU and each of these members
have run clubs during that time and beyond. Congratulations to all concerned!
Black Belt Gradings were held at the end of the day with
twenty eight members attempting Dan Grade Examinations of which eighteen were successful.
A list of successess are given below.

News of Damon's Health Angel Fund
Following the sad death of John Frape, at the cremation
ceremony John's family requested no flowers please but if friends wished, they could make
a donation to Damon's Health Angel Fund. To that end £405.00 was presented to Mick
Dewey for the fund at the kyu grading held at the West of England University Sunday 23rd
July 2006. Damon, his wife Faye and two children Amy and Luke would like to pass
their thanks to Eileen Frape, her family and friends.
Stacy Crowe (Portsmouth KC) Also raised £320.00 at his
Kata training course staged in Portsmouth Sunday 28th May 2006. Again, Damon and
family would to pass on their thanks to Stace and all those who attended and those who
couldn't make it , but paid a training fee anyway.
Instructor Class in Andover Sunday 25th June
2006
Considering the weather and the fact that England were
playing the same day, this course was well attended. The class was split in two with
Brian Smith working with the senior Dan Grades during the first class, going through
various aspects of kumite. Contributions were also invited and given by the more
experienced members of the class, the input from them proved to be very useful. Merv
O'Donnell covered basic Kata and it's bunkai with the less experinced Dan Grade
Instructors which proved to be very interesting and gave them a better understanding.
For the second class, the two instrustors swapped classes with Brian Smith covering
the same aspect of Kumite as the first and Merv O'Donnell running through kata Meikyo
and it's bunkai. Mick Dewey, recovering from major leg surgey observed the days
proceedings with interest.
The whole day was very successful and finished in good time
and allowing most people to get back home in time for the football (not sure about the
Plymouth contingent though)
Representatives from clubs in attendance were:
Plymouth, Portsmouth, Shima, Paulsgrove: Bromley, Portchester, Crofton, Lovedean, Newport
Fitness Factory, Clevedon, Andover, Avon, West of England University - If you can't see
your club on the above list, harrass your instructor to be there or at least send a
representative, it will improve the overall standard of both your club and SEKU.
Watch the events page for future classess.
A GOOD WEEKEND in the WEST COUNTRY 5/6 June
2006
Helston Karate Club
A training course and Kyu Grading was held at Amanda Jury's
club in Helston Cornwall Saturday 3rd June. With the continued recovery of Sensei
Dewey's major leg surgery, it was down to Stacey Crowe 4th Dan from the Portsmouth Karate
Club to conduct the training sessions. As usual there was a general class for all
members which was followed by an extra kumite training for brown belts.
The Grading examination was a success for all those who
entered and was conducted by Sensei Mick Dewey. He commented later that the general
standard of Karate at the club had improved during the last year. Full marks to
Amanda Jury who is busily recruting new and old members alike.
Black & Brown Belt Course Plymouth
Mick Dewey joined Sensei Mervyn O'Donnell the following day
(Sunday 4th June) at the Dojo of Paul Uren, Plymouth Karate-Do for the West Contry Black
& Brown Belt Course and Dan Grading. Again Sensie Dewey sat out the procedings
but oversaw the instruction which was conducted by Sensei O'Donnell who was ably assisted
by Stacey Crowe.
Keith Williams had eaten a 'dodgey curry' the night before
and was left bedridden back at base. It was therefore left to Paul Uren and Steve
Hollister to conduct the Squad Training sessions.
Well done to the following members who were all successful
in their respective Dan Grading Examinations, this included Paul Urens new wife Laura:

Damons Health Angel Fund
A training course in Kaeishi Ippon took place at the
Admiral Lord Nelson School Sunday 28th May in aid of the Damons Health Angel Fund.
Portsmouth Instructor Stacey Crowe 4th Dan ran the course, the content as mentioned
covered Kaeishi Ippon and was enjoyed by all those who attended. It is planned that
Steve Hollister will stage a similar training course in the near future in the Plymouth
area.
Thanks to those who did attend although Stacey had
expressed his disappointment in the lack of attendance from local club members at his
course in Portsmouth - lets hope that Steve gets better support in Plymouth for this
worthy cause.
John Frape
Eileen Frape and family would like to thank everyone attending John's
funeral, in their own words "It meant so much to us all" They would also
like to thank one and all for the flowers, cards and donations as it was much appreciated.
Eileen and the family said it was just as John would have wanted it - short and
with no fuss and bother.
John Frape (Avon Karate Club) passed away Tuesday 11th April 9.30pm.and
was cremated Thursday 20th April 2006 at the South Bristol Crematorium, Bridgewater Road,
Bristol, Avon, BS13 7AS
John Frape was very popular amongst the SEKU membership and will be
greatly missed by all.

BLACK/BROWN BELT COURSE & DAN GRADING on the ISLE of
WIGHT
A well attended Black and Brown Belt Course took place at Medina High
School, Newport IOW on Sunday 26th February 2006. Students studied aspects of Jiyu
Ippon during the morning class. Various Kata and Bunkai was practiced during
the afternoon class, this would be needed for some students who were attempting
their Dan grading later on in the day.
A high pass rate was achieved although, there were some disappointments,
but to reassure those who were disappointed on the day, determination and adjustments in
your approach to training will put matters right for the next attempt at grading.
Successful Dan Grade candidates on the day are listed below
Some members had travelled from Devon and Cornwall to attended and we have
recived some very positive feedback from this course along with the Instructor Class held
in Andover 12th February. The next Dan Grading opportunity will take place on Sunday
4th June in Plymouth, Devon - Pleas note - This date has been re-scheduled from
Sunday 11th June.
It is planned to schedule another Instructor Class as soon as an
appropriate date becomes available - keep your eyes on the 'Events' page on the SEKU
website.

INSTRUCTOR CLASS IN ANDOVER
A well attended course was held at a new location in Andover Sunday 12th
February. Thirty plus Club instructors and assistant Instructors were put through
their paces by the Senior SEKU Instructors, Mervyn O'Donnell and Brian Smith and overseen
by Chief Instructor Mick Dewey.
Theme for the first part of the day was general basics followed by
an intense study of Yoko Geri. Kizama Tsuki and Gyaku Tsuki were then tested for
effect to the extreme. Chosen Kata for the day was Wankan with bunkai demonstrated
by the innovative Brian Smith.
All who were in attendance said after that they enjoyed the training. It
was somewhat overwhelming to some of the new junior instructors however, who were in
attendance for the first time but, they soon settled in as senior club Instructors took
them under their wings and guided them through the day. It was generally accepted
that class had an abundance of content and that members had plenty to take back to their
respective clubs and pass on to their students.
Seminar's such as this are the way forward and is 'good practice' for SEKU
and it's Club Instructors. Training methods, teaching systems, grading syllabi,
basic and advanced Kata, good technique/bad technique are all studied and put into
practice at length and will lead only to a better understanding of our Karate and teaching
methods.
The only down side to the day was that some Senior Club Instructors were
prominent by their absence and their clubs were not represented - if you were one of those
who were unable to attend, and you are unable to make future courses, please send your
assistant Instructors as your club will only benefit.
Keep your eye on the Events page for the date of the next

AVON REGION COURSE & GRADING
The Avon region Kyu grading was held at the University of the West of
England Sunday 29th January. Although it was a small grading the standard was good
and most candidates went home successful. Thanks to John Shyne for allowing us
to use his Dojo
SOUTH WEST COURSE & GRADING
Second of the 2006 training courses for Kyu grades happened in Plymouth
Devon Sunday 22nd January and proved to be as successful as the previous weekend held in
Portsmouth. Hosted by Paul Uren's Plymouth Karate-Do Club in the Lipson Community
College it was as usual, well attended.
Brenda Gibert brought her club members along from Liskerrys Karate-Do
(Liskeard) for training and the grading examination. All members who entered the
grading exam were successful in attaining thier next rank.
Those in attendance enjoyed the rest of the day with unstruction
given by Mick Dewey and Paul Uren respectively.
HAMPSHIRE COURSE & GRADING
2006 kicked off with a successful course and grading for Kyu grades at the
Honbu Dojo Portsmouth on the weekend of 14/15 January. Three Dojo's were in use as
usual, thanks for support from various instructors and administration who helped the day
run smoothly. One pleasing outcome was the attendance of members for training only
and ther just for grading purposes.

SEKU TEAM TRAVEL TO SLOVAKIA
SEKU Team Members Hannah Day, Dave Galloway, Keith Williams, Matt Powell,
John Shyne, Steve Hollister, Aarron Hill, Stacey Crowe Team Coach and Mick Dewey as Head
of Delegation travelled to Trnava Slovakia 5th December. Ths is a trip that the team
make every year and as always were made extremely welcome.
Since last year our hosts have changed associations and we were forced to
fight in the WKF rules which does not suit us at all. All members fought well though
and the nearest we got to a kumite trophy was Dave Galloway who fought his way to 4th
place in his particular category.
Steve Hollister won the Senior Mens Kata and Keith Williams taking 3rd
place in the same event.

GREAT CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE MOUNTBATTEN CENTRE PORTSMOUTH
The 35th Portsmouth Open Karate Championships were held at the Mountbatten
Centre Portsmouth Saturday 19th November. After a couple of bleak years the ocassion
seemed to be back to its normal self, the organisers had toyed with the WKF rules style
two years back and it proved to be most unpopular. People voted with their feet and
simply didn't turn up. This year though, the competition rules were reverted back to
Shobbu Ippon that we know and love, there was an excellent attendance from both
competitors spectators alike and the entire day was buzzing again.
Frank Hatton who hosts his own show on BFBS Radio Gibraltar acted as
Master of Ceremonies/Announcer, was very entertaining and good value for money. We
have had good feedback and spectators, officials and competitors all enjoyed the
day.

SEKU Team Squad to Gibraltar
A thirteen member party travelled to Gibraltar 4/5/6/7th November for a
weekend of training in preparation for their trip to Slovakia in December.
Hosted by our good friend Frankie Hatton who now resides just accross the
border in Spain, he arranged for the team to train each day in the gymnasium on Devils
Tower Camp. Training had a mixture of traditional as well as more advanced aspectsto
it. GBC Television camera's visited the gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, giving the
squad a break from formal training and a chance to show what can be done with Kata and
it's bunkia, this was demonstrated by Hannah Day, Emma Williams and Karyn Galloway. Jyu
Ippon was demonstrated by Keith Williams and Matt Powell with some full kumite by various
team members leaving the television crew quite impressed. Sensei Mick Dewey was then
interviewed by the TV crew. The following day Mick and Stacey Crowe accompanied
Frankie to the studio of BFBS radio Gibraltar where he hosts his own show - 'The Fankie
Factor' and conducted a further interveiw.
Among Frankie's many talents is that of tour guide and he arranged to take
the members for a tour of the 'rock' and it's history including St Michael's
cave and the seige tunnels leaving, them amazed at the wonderful sights Gibraltar has to
offer.

Kyu Grade Examinations
A successful round of gradings have been held throughout all regions
recently - The Hants gradings were as usual very well attended with many students enjoying
success. The Somerset event was not such a happy one however, as there was a last
minute change of venue this was through no fault of John Shyne whose Dojo had been double
booked by the College administrators. Those who attended enjoyed the day, conducted
by Sensie O'Donnell.
The South West Grading in Plymouth was a busy day for all in attendance,
morning training sessions were led by Chief Instructor Mick Dewey and Sensei Brian Smith.
During the afternoon session, examinations were being carried out by Sensei Dewey
and Sensei Smith held a referee/Judges course, in preparation for the forthcoming
Portsmouth Open Karate Championships, 19th November 2005.

CHRIS UREN'S FUND RAISING FOR DAMONS HEALTH ANGEL FUND
Chris Uren presented a cheque for the sum of £2040.00 to the above fund.
Donations were also received from The Newport Karate Club (IOW) £100.00, Brian
Smith and the Lovedean KC of £100.00, £112.50 from Mark Elliot's Fitness Factory KC,
£170.00 from Helston KC and £245.00 raised in training fees by Keith Williams at his
Kata course and £25.00 from Damons sister Kerry, gives Chris a final total of: £2782.00.
Clubs at which Chris trained during his 'Trainathon' i.e. Plymouth
Karate-Do, Saltash Swanda, Portchester and Portsmouth, gave their training fees
directly to Chris and are included in the final sum. Support and donation's also
came individually from John Freith, John Shyne and Donald McIntosh's Wednesday class.
To quote Chris himself - "I could write a book on the names that have
supported us all but simply to say that my colleagues in work, my past and my present
friends have given us from pennies to pounds and each donation was given freely"
A further quote from Chris in his letter - "Please pass on my thanks
to the clubs that supported us, as they have by doing their bit in giving me the strength
to complete my 'Trainathon'
Mick and Maureen Dewey, along with Damon and Faye and their little family
would also like thank all involved. It is gesture's like this this that gives faith
in human nature and makes one fell quite humble.
The money will go toward making Damon and his family a little more
comfortable by means of regular maintainence of his mobility scooter, regular supply of
medication (imported from America) and a six month course of acupuncture/traditional
Chinese medical treatment recently begun that will give us hope.
The exercise will also hopefully raise the plight of the many people both
young and old who suffer from this terrible illness.
NEW INSTRUCTOR FOR HELSTON KARATE CLUB
Due to the fact that they are both training to become school teachers,
Tony and Di Stevens have decided to retire from running the Helston Karate Club.
They decided that the work-load of running the club and school-teacher training
would be too much and as a result the club membership would suffer. We thank them
for their support in the past and wish them good luck in their new venture.
From the 1st August 2005, the club will be run by Amanda Jury who has been
associated with SEKU for a number of years both in Helston and formerly at her previous
club in Burgess Hill in Sussex . Amanda will be ably assisted by Gavin 'Mini'
Cooper.
SEKU clubs from the Plymouth and Liskeard area have pledged their support
to Amanda and Gavin, good luck to all and we hope the club membership enjoy training with
both Sensie Amanda and Gavin. We look forward to seeing you all at various SEKU
events.
KATA COURSE IN PLYMOUTH
Keith Williams from Portsmouth Karate Club held an impromptu kata training
course at the Dojo of Plymouth Karate-Do Sunday 3rd July. The class studied the kata
Jitte and its bunkai, in depth and around 40 karate-ka attended, some from afar afield as
Bournemouth. The class was well received by those who attended and for those who
didn't - you missed out.
Keith was inspired into running the course by Chris Uren's training
marathon, details of which are below. Paul Uren supplied the Dojo for free and
£245.00 in total was raised for the 'Damons Health Angel Fund' for which Damon, his wife
Faye and family are truly grateful. Chris Uren is waiting for the last minute
donations before he can give a final total of the amount he has raised.
As a knock-on effect from Chris Uren's 'Trainathon', Mark Elliott's
Newport Fitness Factory Club donated £110.00 for Damon's fund and Brian Smith collected
£100.00 from his Lovedean Karate Club members.
UPDATE ON CHRIS UREN'S KARATE MARATHON
Chris Uren completed his karate marthon to celebrate his sixtieth
birthday, trained at the SEKU Black & Brown Belt Course held in Plymouth last
Sunday. Monday he trained again at Plymouth Karate-Do with his son Paul, Tuesday he
was in Saltash, Cornwall at the Dojo of Steve Hollister and Wednesday, back to Plymouth
for a SEKU 'Beasting' from Sensie Donald McIntosh.
Thursday he made his way up to Portsmouth to spend Thursday
evening at the Portsmouth Dojo under the instruction of Sensei Mick Dewey. Finally
Friday night - Chris's sixtieth birthday - he visited the Portchester Dojo to train with
Sensei Mervyn O'Donnell.
After training at Portchester, Chris and his wife Lyn were joined
for a Curry Restaurant meal by both Mick and Maureen Dewey and Mervyn and Sue O'Donnell
along with members of the Portsmouth Club. Matt 'Poseur' Powell was also there
(he gets everywhere) as was Paul Uren and girlfriend Lora.
Chris is hoping to raise money for 'Damons Health Angel Fund' on
the way to complete his challenge. Damon Dewey is an MS sufferer and money raised
will hopefully make life a little easier for him and his young family.
If you want to make a donation to for Chris's efforts, you can
contact him on Email: c.f.uren@btinternet.com - or
Tel: 01752702578.
SOUTH WEST BLACK & BROWN BELT COURSE
The course was held at the Dojo of Paul Uren the Plymouth Karate-Do with
members attending from Clevedon, Avon, Liskeard, Saltash, Portsmouth and Plymouth.
The classes began with a short warm-up with Sensei Dewey and continued
with Sensei O'Donnell who spent an hour and a half on the finer points of Kata
Chinte. The second class conducted by Sensei Mick Dewey, was given over to Jiyu
Ippon Sho, followed by half an hour of Randori.
It was a special day for Paul's dad Chris Uren, who used this course to
launch his charity push to raise money for 'Damons Health Angel Fund'.
The next time any of you decide not to go training because
are too tired, check out the ages of these amazing members in the picture below and
take some encouragement from them! The picture was taken after Black and Brown Belt
training at the Plymouth Dojo.

SEKU SUMMER COURSE MOUNTBATTEN CENTRE
PORTSMOUTH
The annual training course held at the Mountbatten Centre
in Portsmouth took place as usual. Training sessions were led by Sensei's Mick
Dewey, Merv O'Donnell and Brian Smith with the class content spread across the usual three
K's -Kihon, Kata and Kumite with some self-defence techniques incorporated in the
training. The course was well received with all course members going home happy with
what they had acheived and learned during the training. All pledged to return again next
year.
PORTSMOUTH : ENGLAND 'V' TRNAVA : SLOVAKIA
INTERNATIONAL MATCH
Our friends from the City of Trnava in Slovakia were
invited to meet the SEKU team Squad in a friendly International match. The match was
staged on Sunday afternoon of the Summer Course.
The new Lord Mayor of Portsmouth was in attendance with
Lady Mayoress in order to welcome the Slovakian Team members. Their 'Head of
Delegation' Viera Malatinkova, accepted a hand written greeting from the Lord Mayor, on
behalf of his counter-part, The Lord Mayor of the City of Trnava.
After the formal opening ceremony, the match got underway.
In the first round Steve Hollister beat Lukas Rosak
2 wazari to1: Dave Galloway lost by the same margin to Maros
Vyskoc: SEKU Stalwart Graham Rowley drew with 1 wazari
each to Jakub Garjarsky: Matt 'Poser' Powell gave
a good account of himself against former world champion Peter Broda but
eventually lost 2 wazari to 1: Keith 'Bam Bam' Williams had a very
difficult task in taking on Martin Hacko, Martin is the current European
Karate and Kick Boxing Champion. During the round, several clashes were encoutered with
Keith living up to his nick name of 'Bam Bam'! unfortunately he lost the fight 1 wazari to
2.
At half-time the audience were treated to some worthy
demonstrations of Traditional Shotokan Karate. Firstly by Jamie Benny, Robert Cooper
and Adam Woodford from the Portchester Club. Then by Hannah Day and Emma Williams
gave a display of Jiyu Ippon Kumite as it should be done. Lastly a very good display
of a variety of techniques used in combat shown by Stacey Crowe and Dave Galloway both
form the Portsmouth Karate Club
Second round: Keith Williams lost 2
to 1 to Lukas Rosak: Next up was Steve Hollister who
kept a clean sheet in both fights by beating Maros Vyskoc, by 1 wazari to
0: Dave Galloway who is currently attempting to
make a breakthrough in the Irish team, was desperately unlucky in losing
to Jacub Garjusky 2 to 1: Matt Smith did an
excellent job in beating Peter Broda 2 Wazari to 1: Matt
Powell, clearly upset at being beaten in the previous round showed his hunger
against the very experienced Champion Martin Hacko. He came out with all
guns blazing, scoring first with jodan kizami suki, this was Hacko's wake up call and he
stepped up a gear and showed his experience and why he is European Champion, by catching
Powell with two well timed techniques to win the match.
Slovakia are very strong opposition and also very
eperienced at European and World level Having said that, the SEKU team
members put up a good display, it was a good exercise for them from which they gained a
lot of experience, well done lads, it was a good show. Paul Uren, who
acted as team coach and who gave up some weekends preparing the team for the match and
should be congratulated for his enthusiasm and his time spent in overseeing the coaching
of the team for the event.
During their stay
Many thanks are offered to: Patrick Mellor, Kerry Mellor, Andy Martin
and Faye Dewey for acting as guides to the members of the Slovak Karate Team during their
stay in Portsmouth.
Our guests were given a tour of the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard that
included HMS Victory and The Mary Rose. The tour also included a visit to the
Bridge Tavern for lunch before returning to the Dockyard for a 'Round the Harbour Boat
Trip'.
Special thanks should go to Patrick Mellor for acting as 'Head Chauffer'
and Andy Martin as 'Money Monitor/Head of Delegation' and a special thanks also to Kerry
and Faye for looking after the two ladies Viera Malatinkov and Renata Gasparovicova who
were included in the travel party.

This is a popular Shotokan event and was very well attended this year and
Darren Jumnoodoo and his helpers should be congratulated, I think a larger venue will be
in order for next year. Shobu Ippon has been regarded as a poor relation in recent years
with WKF rules being preferred by competiters.
Our beleif is that with more tournaments like this there will be a
move back toward traditional competition and, todays event will go a long way to
encourage this happening . The next traditional tournament on the calender is the
long running Portsmouth Open Shobu Ippon event at the Mountbatten Centre,
Alexandra Park, Portsmouth on Saturday 19th November 2005 - look out for the entry forms.
Matt (Poser) Powell was performing dramatics again disclocating his finger
not once - but Twice! - Anything for attention we say.
NEW VENUE FOR KYU GRADINGS IN BRISTOL
St Matthias Campus at the University of the West of England
the new Dojo of John Shyne, was the venue for the second time of the Avon/Somerset area
Kyu grading. The Dojo itself is a wooden sprung floor, tidy, clean and warm, the
only drawback was the state of the mens changing rooms. Karate training was preceded
by the Rugy club and was very muddy, not entirely suitable to the pure white Gi's of
traditional Karate, but that is a small problem that can easily be rectified.
UWE, Avon, Clevedon and Frome Torii Karate Clubs were in
attendance. Training sessions were held by Sensei Mick Dewey who was assisted by Dave
Pickford and John Frape of Frome Torii and Avon Karate clubs respectively and were
thouroughly enjoyed by the expectant examinees.
Thanks for the use of your Dojo John I'm sure we will be
back again.
The 2nd KATA & KUMITE TRAINING for COMPETITIONS
Following a similar course held in the
Plymouth Dojo 6th March 2005, Another brilliant day of Kata/Kumite was held, this time
held at the Honbu Dojo in Portsmouth, raising a total of £380 in aid of the visit
of our friends from Slovakia and Holland in May. Thanks go to Stacey Crowe and
Keith Williams who did a magnificent job in teaching Kata and Kumite respectively in the
true SEKU manner. Sensei Mick Dewey was also in attendance and gave a course in
self-defence.
Both Paul Uren and Steve Hollister brought many members from the Plymouth
area and in addition to his Plymouth club, Steve also had some of his people from
associate clubs, Bournemouth and Fordingbridge. It is a great pity that local clubs
don't support these events like the outlying clubs do, it would certainly be to their
benefit.
SEKU stalwart Alan Lewis as always, attended with Lawrence Davison and
members of the Crofton club. Mark Elliott sent a contingent across from the Isle of
Wight led by Ian Luff. Alex Cleeves from Clevedon was also there. John Shyne
(West of England University KC) travelled from Newport in Wales to attend! Darren
Hill from Plymouth was there with his broken elbow.
Star of the day had to be John Frape
instructor at the Avon club in Bristol. John puts everyone of us to shame - he is
70+ years of age and supported by his wife Eileen, attends all SEKU events without fail!
Incidentally, John and Eileen made a further contribution to the fund by donating another
£50 - this was over and above Johns training fee!
Shaun Eglinton and Eden Trick both from the Plymouth club each sent a £10
training fee along with their apologies for being unable to attend, as did Andy
Martin from Portchester. Dave Galloway (Portsmouth) was in Dublin for the weekend training
with the Irish team squad - but sent his training fee anyway.
As stated, the fees collected from this event will go toward the visit of
our friends from Slovakia and Holland at the SEKU summer course, when we plan to stage an
International Kumite Event. Thanks to the Portsmouth Dojo, Stacey Crowe and
Keith Williams for your expertise and thanks to all those who attended and made another
good day of it.
Such is their enthusiasm, the hard core of the SEKU Squad were training
again the following morning at the Fort Purbrook dojo, on top of Portsdown Hill.
Look out for courses like this one that may be held in support of this, or
similar events in the near future.

Joe 'Cruncher' Crowe - Portsmouth:
Star of the day! Won the Biff Thompson Memorial Trophy for best spirit, he also won
his event in both Pee Wee Kumite and Pee Wee Kata.
Scott Clements - Plymouth: Won
the Caroline Ryan trophy for technical excellence
Instructors Stacey Crowe and Dave
Galloway from the Portsmouth Dojo gave a demonstration of Karate excellence during
the day.
A very worthy display of self-defence was
also given by Portchester members Jamie Benny, Rob Cooper and Adam Woodford.
Spare a thought for Aaron Hill from the
Plymouth club who broke his elbow during one of his matches. He is now recovering
from surgery after having a pin inserted in order to repair the damage. We wish him
good luck and a full and speedy recovery .
SUCCESSFUL BLACK & BROWN BELT COURSE WITH DAN GRADING
NEWPORT, ISLE OF WIGHT
A Black & Brown Belt Training course and Dan Grading was held on the
Isle of Wight for the first time in a number of years. The course was staged at the
Dojo of Mark Elliott, at the Medina High School, Newport, I.O.W.
The first session conducted by Sensei Mick Dewey, covered Jiyu Ippon in
its various stages. In the second class, Kanku Dai and Bassai Dai were studied and
taught by Sensei's Mervyn O'Donnell and Brian Smith respectively.
Fifty members attended, with many who had come accross from the mainland.
It was a good course and all in attendance agreed there was a good ambiance about
the day. The course will no doubt be held on the Island again.
The day concluded with Black Belt examinations taking place -
congratulations go to the following successful examinees:
