Training Course with Sensei
Hirokazu Kanazawa
SEKU members took the
opportunity to train with SKI Chief Instructor Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa in Cornwall last
week.
Hannah Day, Steve Hollister, Paul Uren and his wife, Shaun Eglinton and
others from the Plymouth Karate-Do and Steve's Saltash Club were able to share their
Karate techniques with Karate-Ka from other associations whilst enjoying a good
evening of training with a serious Karate Legend.
Kanazawa Sensei was a member of the first generation of JKA Instructors
sent into Europe in the mid-sixties.
Stick
Fighting and Karate Training Course
A training course in
stick fighting was staged by Dave Clare at the Portchester Dojo it
was well attended and members found it very interesting and
enjoyed themselves greatly. Alan Lewis instructor at the
Crofton Karate Club led instruction in Karate.
The whole evening
went well and raised a total of £416.00 for the "Damons
Health Angel Fund"
Through courses like
these and other events plus donations etc, we have been able to
purchase the first course of the drug "Aimspro"
The drug has been receiving some very good press for the treatment
of MS sufferers in the media of late but typically, is
unavailable by prescription on the NHS but can be obtained
privately. It is very expensive to buy so you will appreciate that
the above fund raising was well received.
Thanks to all who
attended, Dave Clare and Alan Lewis for giving their instruction
free and to Mervyn O'Donnell who made his Dojo available.
SEKU AGM
Sunday 1st October 2006
The SEKU AGM took place Sunday
1st October 2006 at the Portchester Community School. It was a
well attended meeting and before it began, Ken Lyons, Instructor
at the Uxbridge Karate Club, took the advantage of advertising his
recently published book - the Shotokan Pocket Book
- handing out complimentary issues to those in attendance.
The book is a copilation of the translation of Karateka
terminology and other Japanese words and phrases into English.
It is a very interesting book and will be useful to both junior
and senior Karateka alike. The book will be available soon
through Makoto.
Tribute was paid to John Frape
who tragically died in April this year and some words of acclaim
were spoken by John Shyne who is now responsible for the
Instruction at the Avon Club. He spoke of SEKU being a large
family and that the family had lost one of it's most popular and
loyal members, all those present agreed wholeheartedly.
Brian Smith expressed his
disappointment in SEKU having it's accreditation as a registered
body for the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) cancelled. This
has been brought about by the reluctance of members applying for
CRB disclosure and SEKU therefore, not reaching the
minimum amount of applications needed to continue with this
facility.
Thanks to Paul Uren for the
presentation of the SEKU Team Squad Report. We are actively
encouraging new faces to the regular training sessions to train
alongside senior members who will help and assure them with their
progress. With Pauls enthusiasm and that of Keith Williams
and the rest of the squad members I'm sure the team will go from
strength to strength.
We will be posting the minutes of
this meeting on to the website as soon as they become available.
News of
Damon's Health Angel Fund
Following the sad
death of John Frape, at the cremation ceremony John's family
requested no flowers please but if friends wished, they could make
a donation to Damon's Health Angel Fund. To that end £405.00
was presented to Mick Dewey for the fund at the kyu grading held
at the West of England University Sunday 23rd July 2006.
Damon, his wife Faye and two children Amy and Luke would like to
pass their thanks to Eileen Frape, her family and friends.
Stacy Crowe
(Portsmouth KC) Also raised £320.00 at his Kata training course
staged in Portsmouth Sunday 28th May 2006. Again, Damon and
family would to pass on their thanks to Stace and all those who
attended and those who couldn't make it , but paid a training fee
anyway.
Damons
Health Angel Fund
A training course in
Kaeishi Ippon took place at the Admiral Lord Nelson School Sunday
28th May in aid of the Damons Health Angel Fund.
Portsmouth Instructor Stacey Crowe 4th Dan ran the course, the
content as mentioned covered Kaeishi Ippon and was enjoyed by all
those who attended. It is planned that Steve Hollister will
stage a similar training course in the near future in the Plymouth
area.
Thanks to those who
did attend although Stacey had expressed his disappointment in the
lack of attendance from local club members at his course in
Portsmouth - lets hope that Steve gets better support in Plymouth
for this worthy cause.
John
Frape
Eileen Frape and
family would like to thank everyone attending John's funeral, in
their own words "It meant so much to us all" They
would also like to thank one and all for the flowers, cards and
donations as it was much appreciated. Eileen and the
family said it was just as John would have wanted it - short and
with no fuss and bother.
John Frape (Avon
Karate Club) passed away Tuesday 11th April 9.30pm.and was
cremated Thursday 20th April 2006 at the South Bristol
Crematorium, Bridgewater Road, Bristol, Avon, BS13 7AS
John Frape was very
popular amongst the SEKU membership and will be greatly missed by
all.
CHRIS
UREN'S FUND RAISING FOR DAMONS HEALTH ANGEL FUND
Chris Uren presented
a cheque for the sum of £2040.00 to the above fund.

Brian Smith and the Lovedean KC of £100.00, £112.50 from Mark
Elliot's Fitness Factory KC, £170.00 from Helston KC and £245.00
raised in training fees by Keith Williams at his Kata course and
£25.00 from Damons sister Kerry, gives Chris a final total of: £2782.00.
Clubs at which Chris
trained during his 'Trainathon' i.e. Plymouth Karate-Do, Saltash
Swanda, Portchester and Portsmouth, gave their training fees
directly to Chris and are included in the final sum. Support
and donation's also came individually from John Freith, John Shyne
and Donald McIntosh's Wednesday class.
To quote Chris
himself - "I could write a book on the names that have
supported us all but simply to say that my colleagues in work, my
past and my present friends have given us from pennies to pounds
and each donation was given freely"
A further quote from
Chris in his letter - "Please pass on my thanks to the clubs
that supported us, as they have by doing their bit in giving me
the strength to complete my 'Trainathon'
Mick and Maureen
Dewey, along with Damon and Faye and their little family would
also like thank all involved. It is gesture's like this this
that gives faith in human nature and makes one fell quite humble.
The money will go
toward making Damon and his family a little more comfortable by
means of regular maintenance of his mobility scooter, regular
supply of medication (imported from America) and a six month
course of acupuncture/traditional Chinese medical treatment
recently begun that will give us hope.
The exercise will
also hopefully raise the plight of the many people both young and
old who suffer from this terrible illness.
NEW
INSTRUCTOR FOR HELSTON KARATE CLUB
Due to the fact that
they are both training to become school teachers, Tony and Di
Stevens have decided to retire from running the Helston Karate
Club. They decided that the work-load of running the
club and school-teacher training would be too much and as a result
the club membership would suffer. We thank them for their
support in the past and wish them good luck in their new venture.
From the 1st August
2005, the club will be run by Amanda Jury who has been associated
with SEKU for a number of years both in Helston and formerly at
her previous club in Burgess Hill in Sussex . Amanda will be
ably assisted by Gavin 'Mini' Cooper.
SEKU clubs from the
Plymouth and Liskeard area have pledged their support to Amanda
and Gavin, good luck to all and we hope the club membership enjoy
training with both Sensie Amanda and Gavin. We look forward
to seeing you all at various SEKU events.
KATA
COURSE IN PLYMOUTH
Keith Williams from
Portsmouth Karate Club held an impromptu kata training course at
the Dojo of Plymouth Karate-Do Sunday 3rd July. The class
studied the kata Jitte and its bunkai, in depth and around 40
karate-ka attended, some from afar afield as Bournemouth.
The class was well received by those who attended and for those
who didn't - you missed out.
Keith was inspired
into running the course by Chris Uren's training marathon, details
of which are below. Paul Uren supplied the Dojo for free and
£245.00 in total was raised for the 'Damons Health Angel Fund'
for which Damon, his wife Faye and family are truly
grateful. Chris Uren is waiting for the last minute
donations before he can give a final total of the amount he has
raised.
As a knock-on effect
from Chris Uren's 'Trainathon', Mark Elliott's Newport Fitness
Factory Club donated £110.00 for Damon's fund and Brian Smith
collected £100.00 from his Lovedean Karate Club members.
UPDATE
ON CHRIS UREN'S KARATE MARATHON
Chris Uren
completed his karate marthon to celebrate his sixtieth birthday,
trained at the SEKU Black & Brown Belt Course held in Plymouth
last Sunday. Monday he trained again at Plymouth Karate-Do
with his son Paul, Tuesday he was in Saltash, Cornwall at the Dojo
of Steve Hollister and Wednesday, back to Plymouth for a SEKU 'Beasting'
from Sensie Donald McIntosh.
Thursday he
made his way up to Portsmouth to spend Thursday evening at the
Portsmouth Dojo under the instruction of Sensei Mick Dewey.
Finally Friday night - Chris's sixtieth birthday - he visited the
Portchester Dojo to train with Sensei Mervyn O'Donnell.
After
training at Portchester, Chris and his wife Lyn were joined for a
Curry Restaurant meal by both Mick and Maureen Dewey and Mervyn
and Sue O'Donnell along with members of the Portsmouth Club.
Matt 'Poseur' Powell was also there (he gets everywhere) as
was Paul Uren and girlfriend Lora.
Chris is
hoping to raise money for 'Damons Health Angel Fund' on the way to
complete his challenge. Damon Dewey is an MS sufferer and
money raised will hopefully make life a little easier for him and
his young family.

SEKU
SUMMER COURSE MOUNTBATTEN CENTRE PORTSMOUTH
The annual training
course held at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth took place as
usual. Training sessions were led by Sensei's Mick Dewey,
Merv O'Donnell and Brian Smith with the class content spread
across the usual three K's -Kihon, Kata and Kumite with some self-defence
techniques incorporated in the training. The course was well
received with all course members going home happy with what they
had acheived and learned during the training. All pledged to
return again next year.
PORTSMOUTH : ENGLAND 'V' TRNAVA : SLOVAKIA
INTERNATIONAL MATCH
Our friends from the
City of Trnava in Slovakia were invited to meet the SEKU team
Squad in a friendly International match. The match was
staged on Sunday afternoon of the Summer Course.
The new Lord Mayor
of Portsmouth was in attendance with Lady Mayoress in order to
welcome the Slovakian Team members. Their 'Head of
Delegation' Viera Malatinkova, accepted a hand written greeting
from the Lord Mayor, on behalf of his counter-part, The Lord
Mayor of the City of Trnava.
After the formal
opening ceremony, the match got underway. In the first
round Steve Hollister beat Lukas Rosak
2 wazari to1: Dave Galloway lost by the
same margin to Maros Vyskoc: SEKU Stalwart Graham
Rowley drew with 1 wazari each to Jakub Garjarsky:
Matt 'Poser' Powell gave a good account of
himself against former world champion Peter Broda
but eventually lost 2 wazari to 1: Keith 'Bam Bam'
Williams had a very difficult task in taking on Martin
Hacko, Martin is the current European Karate and Kick
Boxing Champion. During the round, several clashes were encoutered
with Keith living up to his nick name of 'Bam Bam'! unfortunately
he lost the fight 1 wazari to 2.
At half-time the
audience were treated to some worthy demonstrations of Traditional
Shotokan Karate. Firstly by Jamie Benny, Robert Cooper and
Adam Woodford from the Portchester Club. Then by Hannah Day
and Emma Williams gave a display of Jiyu Ippon Kumite as it should
be done. Lastly a very good display of a variety of
techniques used in combat shown by Stacey Crowe and Dave Galloway
both form the Portsmouth Karate Club
Second round: Keith
Williams lost 2 to 1 to Lukas Rosak:
Next up was Steve Hollister who kept a clean
sheet in both fights by beating Maros Vyskoc, by
1 wazari to 0: Dave Galloway who is
currently attempting to make a breakthrough in
the Irish team, was desperately unlucky in losing
to Jacub Garjusky 2 to 1: Matt
Smith did an excellent job in beating Peter Broda
2 Wazari to 1: Matt Powell, clearly
upset at being beaten in the previous round showed his hunger
against the very experienced Champion Martin Hacko. He
came out with all guns blazing, scoring first with jodan kizami
suki, this was Hacko's wake up call and he stepped up a gear and
showed his experience and why he is European Champion, by catching
Powell with two well timed techniques to win the match.
Slovakia are very
strong opposition and also very eperienced at European and World
level Having said that, the SEKU team members
put up a good display, it was a good exercise for them from which
they gained a lot of experience, well done lads, it was a good
show. Paul Uren, who acted as team coach
and who gave up some weekends preparing the team for the match and
should be congratulated for his enthusiasm and his time spent in
overseeing the coaching of the team for the event.
During
their stay
Many thanks are offered to:
Patrick Mellor, Kerry Mellor, Andy Martin and Faye Dewey for
acting as guides to the members of the Slovak Karate Team during
their stay in Portsmouth.
Our guests were given a tour of
the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard that included HMS Victory and The
Mary Rose. The tour also included a visit to the
Bridge Tavern for lunch before returning to the Dockyard for a
'Round the Harbour Boat Trip'.
Special thanks should go to
Patrick Mellor for acting as 'Head Chauffer' and Andy Martin as
'Money Monitor/Head of Delegation' and a special thanks also to
Kerry and Faye for looking after the two ladies Viera Malatinkov
and Renata Gasparovicova who were included in the travel party.
NEW
VENUE FOR KYU GRADINGS IN BRISTOL
St Matthias Campus
at the University of the West of England the new Dojo of John
Shyne, was the venue for the second time of the Avon/Somerset area
Kyu grading. The Dojo itself is a wooden sprung floor, tidy,
clean and warm, the only drawback was the state of the mens
changing rooms. Karate training was preceded by the Rugy
club and was very muddy, not entirely suitable to the pure white
Gi's of traditional Karate, but that is a small problem that can
easily be rectified.
UWE, Avon, Clevedon
and Frome Torii Karate Clubs were in attendance. Training sessions
were held by Sensei Mick Dewey who was assisted by Dave Pickford
and John Frape of Frome Torii and Avon Karate clubs respectively
and were thouroughly enjoyed by the expectant examinees.
Thanks for the use
of your Dojo John I'm sure we will be back again.

The 2nd
KATA & KUMITE TRAINING for COMPETITIONS
Following
a similar course held in the Plymouth Dojo 6th March 2005, Another
brilliant day of Kata/Kumite was held, this time held at the Honbu
Dojo in Portsmouth, raising a total of £380 in aid of the
visit of our friends from Slovakia and Holland in May.
Thanks go to Stacey Crowe and Keith Williams who did a magnificent
job in teaching Kata and Kumite respectively in the true SEKU
manner. Sensei Mick Dewey was also in attendance and gave a course
in self-defence.
Both Paul Uren and
Steve Hollister brought many members from the Plymouth area and in
addition to his Plymouth club, Steve also had some of his people
from associate clubs, Bournemouth and Fordingbridge. It is a
great pity that local clubs don't support these events like the
outlying clubs do, it would certainly be to their benefit.
SEKU stalwart Alan
Lewis as always, attended with Lawrence Davison and members of the
Crofton club. Mark Elliott sent a contingent across from the
Isle of Wight led by Ian Luff. Alex Cleeves from Clevedon
was also there. John Shyne (West of England University KC)
travelled from Newport in Wales to attend! Darren Hill from
Plymouth was there with his broken elbow.
Star
of the day had to be John Frape instructor at the
Avon club in Bristol. John puts everyone of us to shame - he
is 70+ years of age and supported by his wife Eileen, attends all
SEKU events without fail! Incidentally, John and Eileen made a
further contribution to the fund by donating another £50 - this
was over and above Johns training fee!
Shaun Eglinton and
Eden Trick both from the Plymouth club each sent a £10 training
fee along with their apologies for being unable to attend,
as did Andy Martin from Portchester. Dave Galloway (Portsmouth)
was in Dublin for the weekend training with the Irish team squad -
but sent his training fee anyway.
As stated, the fees
collected from this event will go toward the visit of our friends
from Slovakia and Holland at the SEKU summer course, when we plan
to stage an International Kumite Event. Thanks to the
Portsmouth Dojo, Stacey Crowe and Keith Williams for your
expertise and thanks to all those who attended and made another
good day of it.
Such is their
enthusiasm, the hard core of the SEKU Squad were training again
the following morning at the Fort Purbrook dojo, on top of
Portsdown Hill.
Look out for courses
like this one that may be held in support of this, or similar
events in the near future.
