Shotokan Alliance Cometition Officials Course - Reading

SEKU Annual Championships 2008

The SEKU Annual took place Saturday 15th March at the usual venue - the Mountbatten Centre, Alexandra Park, Portsmouth.  The Mountbatten is currently undergoing a massive rebuilding program that made entry to the building a little more difficult than usual.

This did not deter competitors or spectators however and although attendance was lower than expected the day got underway on schedule. Although the bigger clubs were again prominent, smaller clubs found themselves amongst the medals, it is refreshing to see results spread across the membership - see full list of results below.

Thanks to all those competitors, timekeepers, referees, judges, helpers, parents and spectators alike for making the day successful and enjoyable.

You may have noticed the absence of Alan 'Knocker' White from the refereeing panel.  Alan has reluctantly resigned from SEKU after many years of support both as member and competition official in order to continue his love of officiating at EKF/WKF refereeing level.  Thanks to Alan for his constant support and good luck in your future officiating.

It was nice to see our friend Eileen Frape who traveled down from Bristol with John Shyne.  Eileen would always accompany husband John who sadly died following his battle with cancer a couple years back.  Johns Avon Karate club has been in membership with SEKU for many years and was taken on by his senior student John Shyne.

It was unusual to see Steve Hollister on the other side of the fence refereeing and judging at the championships especially with his black eye patch!.   Steve took a heavy knock at the Legend Championships in February and will have to undergo an operation next week in order to repair the damage - good luck to him.

37th Portsmouth Open Championships

the Mountbatten Centre 17th November 2007

So the 37th Portsmouth Open Karate Tournament  has been and gone and didn't everyone do well. It was a very successful day on many levels. Successful for SEKU and the Shotokan Alliance in having so many good competitors from far and wide we appreciate you traveling to Portsmouth on a rainy, chilly November morning. Successful for the organisors as the day went smoothly without major hiccup. Successful for the spectators who came and watched and were thoroughly entertained by you all and finally successful for the competitors themselves that's you, for all the hard work, effort, dedication and training you put in to make this competition what it was. So whether you gained a medal or a round of applause take a bow and our thanks.

Thanks also to our Trophy Sponsors Viviers (UK) Ltd who have been sponsoring us for many years and to Cyber Budo World for their support of the 'Shotokan Alliance' - Shobu Ippon is alive and well - See you at POKT 2008

Shotokan Alliance Cometition Officials Course - Reading

The 'Shotokan Alliance' of which the Portsmouth Open Karate Competition is a founder member, staged their first Competition Officials Training Course at the Holiday Inn Reading Saturday 29th September 2007.

Twenty Eight potential qualifiers from the five 'Shotokan Alliance' member associations attended this course that covered every aspect of competition day  from Time Keeper/Scorer to Tatami Chief.  Darren Jumnoodoo opened the course by explaining what the Alliance was all about and why it was formed.  Kevin Thirlow then gave an excellent Power Point lecture covering the rules of Shobu Ippon.  A break for Coffee and Biscuits and was followed by practical Kumite Refereeing/Judging given by SEKU's Brian Smith.  Simon Staples then took over an overview of Kata performance and Judging with both point scoring and use of the flag system.

The course also attended by Mick Dewey, Mervyn O'Donnell and Gerry Breeze overseeing the day and representing their Alliance Tournaments.  The day proved to be very worthwill and extremely popular will be staged again sometime in the new year.  The next Shotokan Alliance Competition will be the Portsmouth Open Shobu Ippon Event at the Mountbatten Centre Saturday 17th November 2007.

This course is open to all those who are interested and will only improve your Refereeing/Judging ability, and will eventually lead to a 'Shotokan Alliance' qualification.  This qualification will in no way effect the qualifycation you hold with your own association but will enhance your understanding of Shobu Ippon Events overall.

SEKU Memebers in attendance were:  Alan Lewis,  Terry Oliver,  Sacey Crowe,   Dave Pickford, Craig Foley,  Paul Moreby,  Matt Powell,  Sue O'Donnell,  Lowry Green. If you are interested in attending these courses, please presurise your club Instructor/Sectretary for details
