Sensei Peter Turrell - 1st Dan

I began Shotokan Karate in 1982 at the Petersfield Club gaining my Dan Grade in 1985 and continuing at the club until 1987. After this I broke away from Karate and explored other sports including football and weight training. I returned to Karate for 6 months in 1995 at Lovedean Club under Sensei Brian Smith who along with others, had inspired me with awesome performances in kata and kumite in the mid '80s. Due to my growing family and increased commitments I was forced to withdraw and moved out of the area. From 1999 until earlier this year I have been competing at a high level as a local running coach and athlete, achieving a marathon time of 2hrs 43mins and Hampshire Championship standard at a more local level. Having retired from running and my son showing an interest in Karate I went back to train under Brian Smith with the view to re-opening a Shotokan club in Petersfield  and hopefully to increase my own knowledge and gain a higher grade.

Sensei John Shyne

As I did a Korean style of karate, I believe this helped with my flexibility which is a useful part of my karate. It was a good induction and got martial arts into my blood. I dabbled in a few martial arts in between but it wasn't until I started University did I train in earnest. I started at Avon Karate club in Jan 1999. After training hard I achieved my black belt in Feb 2003. Encouraged and inspired by Sensei John Frappe I started my own club at the University in late 2003. I passed my 2nd Dan in June 2005. After the sad passing of my Sensei, I took over the running of the Avon club, hopefully passing on the spirit and the knowledge that I have inherited. I have been fortunate enough to be part of the SEKU squad visiting Slovakia twice and also Gibraltar.
